Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation continues crucial support for Armed Forces community

The Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation has extended its longstanding partnership with SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, which has seen the business provide life-changing and even life-saving funding to the charity since 2008.

Sodexo works across several military sites across the UK, Cyprus, and the Falkland Islands, delivering a wide range of catering, food, and facilities management services to meet the unique and varied needs of the military.

The Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation has supported SSAFA since 2008 through volunteering, employee fundraising, sponsorship, and by providing vital support to SSAFA’s key services.

Supporting veterans is central to the fight against food insecurity. This support responds to a clear need: Trussell research found veterans are twice as likely to run out of food than people who have never served in the Armed Forces.

Over the years, the Foundation has donated more than £550,000 to SSAFA, helping the charity address the urgent issue of deprivation and food poverty in the Armed Forces community, including veterans and their families.

With this support, SSAFA can help those in need access essential household items, emergency food and grocery supplies through its Crisis Fund.

One SSAFA beneficiary of this fund had been a victim of domestic violence, perpetrated by their spouse, who was subsequently arrested and placed on bail, but living away from the family home in a hostel. Due to the extraordinary change in circumstance, the family - including three dependent children - had its Universal Credit stopped as the claim was in joint names. This left the children’s parent without funds to buy food and essentials. Although they had been to the local foodbank, which had provided bread and eggs, there was still a shortage of food. The supermarket vouchers provided by SSAFA that same day enabled the beneficiary to buy essential food, and clothing, for the family.

The company’s support comes in other forms, too. A team of seven from Sodexo’s Warminster Garrison spent the day volunteering on various gardening and maintenance jobs in the wellbeing garden of RNAS Yeovilton, coinciding with the opening of the Sir Donald Gosling Lookout Wellbeing Centre. Sodexo staff are also active in SSAFA’s Mentoring scheme and are enthusiastic participants in fundraising events such as the 13 Bridges Challenge, entering a team annually, with over two hundred team members taking part in the event over the past three years

Patrick Forbes, Chair of Trustees at the Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation, said: “We are incredibly proud to support the SSAFA Crisis Fund for another year. The longevity of our relationship reflects our shared commitment to supporting members of the Armed Forces community when they need it most, and it is a real privilege to work with an organisation we can support in so many meaningful ways including this funding, mentoring, fundraising, mentoring and volunteering.”

Aaron Flemons, Corporate Account Manager at SSAFA, added: “We’re very grateful to the Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation for its continued support. No veteran - regulars or reserves, male or female, or whether from the Royal Navy, the Army, or the Royal Air Force, or their families - should ever live in deprivation. The invaluable support of companies like Sodexo ensures that we can support as many members of the Armed Forces community as possible, whenever they need some help, while maintaining their dignity, pride in their service to this nation, and independence.”
