Volunteer at an Event

Join TEAM SSAFA for a day, and support one of our events in support of our Armed Forces community.

Whether cheering on runners at the London Marathon, supporting fundraisers taking on the 13 Bridges Challenge or helping us to represent and raise awareness of SSAFA and our work at Battle Proms picnic concerts, our events volunteers play a crucial role in the successful delivery of many SSAFA events across the country.

Why should I consider volunteering at a SSAFA event?

Joining TEAM SSAFA at one of our events provides a brilliant opportunity to

  • Gain some new skills and events experience.
  • Meet fantastic, like-minded people.
  • Experience a heart-warming, uplifting - and fun - day out!
  • Support our Armed Forces and play your part in ensuring the continued delivery of lifechanging, frontline services to those who turn to SSAFA.

What’s involved? Do I need any experience?

The SSAFA Events team will be on hand at every event to provide support and guidance.

You don’t need any volunteering experience to come and help at a SSAFA event!

All we ask is that you are an enthusiastic team player, you enjoy interacting with other people, and that you are keen to help continue the mission to support our Armed Forces and their families.

Whist every event is different, regular tasks include:

  • Cheering on runners, walkers, and cyclists at SSAFA cheer points
  • Handing out water and refreshments to our fundraising athletes
  • Congratulating our fundraisers and handing out medals
  • Helping direct crowds of people
  • Collecting donations

…and, most importantly...

  • Being friendly and approachable whilst wearing your SSAFA t-shirt!

What our events volunteers say

We’re lucky enough to know for certain that supporting a SSAFA event is a fantastic and fun day out...but don’t just take our word for it!  Read what our volunteers have to say:

“As well as taking part in the Vitality 10k, 13 Bridges Challenge and multiple bike rides for SSAFA as a fundraiser, I’ve absolutely loved helping the team out as a volunteer at several events. I’d highlight the wonderful Battle Proms concerts and the London Marathon, which I often say is my favourite day of the year.

"Cheering on the SSAFA runners, getting stuck in setting up cheer points, meeting runner’s families, giving struggling runners a lift with an encouraging word, and spending the day in a joyous atmosphere all add up to a truly special occasion. In addition, getting to meet the SSAFA runners and hearing their stories about why they support the charity is an honour, and something I find very inspiring. The Events team are lovely to work with and volunteering at any of the events is an absolute joy.”

- James

“Volunteering at SSAFA events is an amazing opportunity to connect with individuals who share your enthusiasm and passion for the charity. I frequently volunteered for SSAFA, helping with events like 13 Bridges Challenge, Battle Proms at Hatfield and London Marathon. Every event had its own charm, every time it was like a team-building day, and I made plenty of friends. I never felt alone because the events team was so encouraging and gave us clear instructions.”

"This was an opportunity to learn how to be organised, practise social skills by striking up conversation with complete strangers, be innovative when raising vital funds for SSAFA, and much more! If you wish to be a cheerleader for the dedicated marathon runners, hang out with the daring paratroopers, or party in the park with live music and watch the fireworks, there is no better way than to volunteer with the events team!”

- Samia

“I’ve volunteered for 13 Bridges, The Battle Proms, and the London Marathon. They were all great days out, a chance to soak in the atmosphere of thousands of people who were also there to have the same great time. The other volunteers were a real mix, individuals, couples, families, and groups of friends, all deeply connected to SSAFA’s great work. Everyone had really surprising stories to tell, and I felt I was seeing everyone at their very best. I can’t think of a better use of my time, so if you haven’t done it before, please do give it a go. And the help needed on the day is really easy!”

- Iqtadar

James, Samia and Iqtadar all provided crucial help to SSAFA at our big events, as well as having a great day out.  Register your interest today to help out at one (or more!) of our events!
