RAF Benson team tackles 24 hour National Three Peaks challenge to support SSAFA
09 July 2026
A dedicated team of personnel from the Joint Helicopter Support Squadron (JHSS) is set to undertake the formidable National Three Peaks Challenge, aiming to summit the highest mountains in Scotland, England, and Wales - Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) - within an ambitious 24-hour window to raise money for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.
Facing unpredictable weather, demanding terrain, and extreme fatigue, the team will push their physical and mental limits in a test of endurance, resilience, and teamwork. But this challenge represents more than just a personal achievement - it is a mission with a powerful purpose: providing vital funds for SSAFA, ensuring we can keep providing lifelong support to serving personnel, veterans, and their families.
Every step taken across up steep ascents and through rugged landscapes, is driven by a shared commitment to give back to those who have served. Through this challenge, the JHSS team hopes to raise both awareness and funds to support SSAFA’s essential work.
Master Aircrew Russell Vickers says: “SSAFA is a charity that's incredibly close to the hearts of service personnel, veterans and their families. Knowing we're helping to support its vital work and raise awareness is a huge motivation for everyone at JHSS as we take on this arduous challenge.”
Supporters are encouraged to follow the team’s journey, share their story, and contribute whatever they can. Every donation will directly impact the lives of service personnel and veterans, helping ensure they receive the care and support they deserve.
Together, this extraordinary challenge can become a force for meaningful change.
