Blackpool GP from Preston prepares to run London Marathon for SSAFA inspired by military fitness sessions

A Blackpool GP and mum of two is preparing to take on the London Marathon in support of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, after being inspired by a close friend who runs the military-style fitness sessions she attends.
Samantha Parker, 36, who lives in Preston with her husband Chris, their sons Harry (six) and Jack (four), and their border terrier Pickle, will join thousands of runners on the start line later this month as she takes on the iconic 26.2-mile challenge.
Although Samantha does not have a military background herself, she’s supporting SSAFA after learning more about the charity’s work through her friend Paul Game, who leads the outdoor military-style PGPT fitness sessions she regularly attends, and who is also running the marathon for SSAFA.
Alongside training for the event, Samantha continues to work locally as a GP in Blackpool while balancing family life and her long-standing passion for running, hiking and supporting Preston North End – she has held a season ticket for 28 years.
Samantha said: “Training for the London Marathon has been a real challenge alongside work and family life, but I’m incredibly proud to be running for SSAFA. I’ve learned so much about the support the charity gives to serving personnel, veterans and their families, and it feels special to be able to do something practical to help. Running alongside my friend Paul has made it even more meaningful.”
SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity provides lifelong support to serving personnel, veterans and their families when they need it most. This includes practical assistance, emotional support and help through difficult times.
By taking on the London Marathon, Samantha hopes to raise awareness of the challenges some members of the Armed Forces community face and to help ensure support is available for those who need it.
She added: “Knowing the difference SSAFA makes to people’s lives has kept me motivated through the training. I’m really looking forward to race day and hopefully doing the charity proud.”
Samantha is encouraging local people to support her fundraising efforts as she prepares to take on one of the world’s most famous races.
