Zoe
Branch Secretary
I started in November in search for some experience to coincide with my degree. Upon joining my eyes were opened to today's reality. Changing from opportunity to a passion. Having veterans in my family, I want no one to battle alone in their darkest hour. I know how life changing leaving the service can be. But only through my volunteering role, I came to the realisation of the reality for many of veterans and their families.
Carole
Casework Manager & Treasurer
I chose to join SSAFA after taking redundancy during Covid. I wanted to use my skills to help our Armed Services community after seeing how Veterans are treated in America compared to what is available to Veterans and their families here. My background is in Finance and Leadership where I worked for over 40 years. I love travelling and going to interesting and unusual places. I also love all types of animals, even though I am allergic to most of them.

Branch Caseworker
With a military background as a former Sergeant and Radio Engineer in the Royal Corps of Signals, I served 11 years in the Army before moving into the telecommunications and renewable energy sectors. I first joined SSAFA as a volunteer in 2014, mentoring wounded, injured, and sick service personnel transitioning out of the Armed Forces. Today, I volunteer as a caseworker with the Lanarkshire branch, supporting veterans and their families across North and South Lanarkshire. It’s a role that brings me immense pride and satisfaction, helping others navigate some of life’s most challenging moments.

After 24 years in health and social care I retired last year and felt I still wanted to help people. SSAFA had helped my dad in the past and when looking at their website saw they were looking for caseworkers which sounded similar to my working role, and applied for position of caseworker. I completed my training at the end of last year and love the role I currently have. I retired last year, I am married have two grandchildren aged 7 and 5 who keep me on my toes and like travelling and reading.

I chose to volunteer with SSAFA as I wanted to help make life a bit more manageable and hopefully happier for someone and I feel that there is no one more deserving of this than veterans. Veterans are people that give up so much to help everyone else and yet often become a forgotten and isolated community. I have only been volunteering for a few months and have already met so many remarkable people and look forward to what my role will bring to me in the future. I previously studied Law which helped me learn good organisational and research skills and I then worked in International Transport for 13 years. I have now began studies in Counselling which I hope will help enrich my skills to be a worthy caseworker.

I choose to volunteer with SSAFA as I plan on joining the armed forces upon the completion of my studies and I thought it best to help those like minded individuals whom I will one day have future contact with have been volunteering for just over 1 year. My time being an athlete competing at a high level developed my communication skills which in turn allows me to speak to clients in a way that we are all able to achieve the desired result.
