SSAFA helps celebrate World War II veteran’s 100th birthday

28 July 2026

A Second World War veteran has celebrated his 100th birthday with a special community event organised with the support of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.

Arthur Harkness, who turned 100 last week, was joined by friends, family and fellow veterans at Hillheads, home of Whitley Bay Rockcliff RFC, for a celebration recognising both his remarkable milestone and his wartime service.

Representing SSAFA, Chris Tearney, Chair of SSAFA Tyne and Wear, presented Arthur with a birthday card from the charity alongside a congratulatory letter from His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, Lucy Winskell OBE.

As part of the celebrations, Arthur also climbed aboard a beautifully restored British Army Land Rover, providing a nostalgic reminder of the military vehicles that served generations of Armed Forces personnel.

Chris Tearney said: “It is an honour and a privilege to celebrate Arthur’s 100th birthday with his friends and family. Arthur is a humble man who answered his country’s call when he was needed. Today was about recognising not only an incredible milestone but also thanking him for his service and ensuring veterans like Arthur know they will never be forgotten.

At SSAFA, we are proud to stand alongside veterans and their families throughout their lives, and it was a privilege to be part of such a special occasion.”

Arthur’s celebration, hosted by the Royal British Legion Breakfast Club, brought together organisations committed to recognising the contribution of veterans and ensuring their service continues to be remembered.
