From support to service: a military charity helped him – and now he’s helping others

01 July 2026

After an incident left a family member needing aid, Philip needed support. He found solace in SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, and after receiving not just practical support, but kindness, he knew he wanted to give back. Three years on, Philip has gone on to support more 40 people and oversee more than 300 cases for people across Somerset.

Somerset-based Philip Smith, 65, proudly served in the Royal Navy for 10 years. After transitioning to civvy street more than 30 years ago, a close family member had an incident, leaving them in need of specialist equipment to enable independence.

With other services unable to provide aid, Philip didn’t know where to turn. While discussing the situation with a fellow veteran, he was encouraged to reach out to SSAFA, a charity which supports veterans and their families.

As a man of his word, Philip called SSAFA – and his life was changed forever.

Philip said: “We met a caseworker and he made the whole situation seem manageable. Within a couple of weeks, the funds were raised to purchase the equipment. He went above and beyond to help us settle back into a normal life for which we shall be eternally grateful and never forget.

“I needed to do something to repay this kindness, and he suggested becoming a SSAFA volunteer. I applied the following day and have been with the charity ever since.

“Being a caseworker has given me such a sense of achievement. When you stand with a client at the end of a case having been successful, there is no greater feeling than knowing you helped someone who has been struggling in whatever aspect. It’s a very emotional moment and I don't mind admitting I have shed a tear or two at these times.”

In April 2024, Philip's outstanding commitment was recognised when he was presented with the Sir James Gildea Award, which honours volunteers for exceptional contribution to SSAFA's values.

Philip said: “This award was not for me. It was for every member of the Somerset branch of SSAFA who are always at the end of a phone if you need assistance or a question that needs answering. I worked with some amazing teams during my time in the Royal Navy, but the SSAFA team I work with now is second to none.

“If you are a veteran with time on your hands or somebody who appreciates what the Armed Forces do for our country, I urge you to consider joining our team. You will make lifelong friends, meet great people and enjoy the feeling and pride of assisting a fellow human being.”

When Philip’s family needed help, SSAFA was there

When he wanted to give back, SSAFA made space

When others are calling for support, Philip is there
