Our fantastic fundraisers!

15 October 2019

Our fundraisers and volunteers are amazing. We couldn’t do our work without them and they are at the very heart of what we do.

People help us in all sorts of ways, which means we can help veterans and service personnel and their families in our local community.

Some of our volunteers become caseworkers who visit those who need assistance, people who often feel isolated in attempting to get their lives back on track. The efforts of our volunteers are truly appreciated by those who need the help most, assisting with advice, the completion of paperwork and the applications necessary to get the funding they need to maintain an independent lifestyle.

Our volunteers are fully trained to be in the best position to give the practical and emotional support our charity is committed to providing in so many worthy cases every year.

Some of our volunteers stand in the cold and rain collecting outside supermarkets - we hold a number of street collections in the county each year - and these are wonderful opportunities to engage with the public to help get the SSAFA message across, informing people of the work we do.

Some of our volunteers prefer to fundraise and will support SSAFA by achieving a goal, such as running a marathon for sponsorship or organising their own event, such as a pub quiz or a bake sale.

Other people enjoy taking part in some of SSAFA’s challenge events, such as the Rally for Heroes, which takes place in 2020 and will see people drive five miles for every fallen hero since the start of the campaign in Afghanistan, covering 3,000 miles across Europe.

Andrew Meek, Shropshire branch chairman, said: “Our volunteers and fundraisers love what they do.
“The sense of pride you get when you know you’ve helped someone get their independence and dignity back is extraordinary.

“Nationally figures show that in 2017, SSAFA helped 73,227 people in the Armed Forces community, supporting 551 people through the Prison-In-Reach and Veterans in the Criminal Justice System programmes and the Mentoring Programme supported 121 wounded, injured and sick service leavers.
“We can’t do that without help!”
