Wirral veteran Gina Allsop smashes 5,200-mile challenge — finishing at the foot of Everest for SSAFA

19 November 2025

Inspirational Wirral veteran, Gina Allsop, has completed an extraordinary year-long challenge, covering 5,200 miles – the equivalent of 100 miles every single week for a year – in support of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.

From organised walks, weekend hikes with friends, camping adventures in the hills to static cycling or walking at home, and even climbing to Everest Base Camp, Gina has clocked up the miles in every possible way.

Her epic journey ended in dramatic style when she led a team of women to the foot of Mount Everest, battling through what she describes as an “unforgettable test of endurance” during the Everest storm of 2025.

Gina took on the challenge in memory of her brother who died from cancer and to give back to SSAFA – the charity that supported her during her own toughest times.

After being diagnosed with PTSD five years ago, Gina turned to cycling to help manage her mental health. But following a serious accident that wrecked her bike, it was SSAFA who stepped in, sourcing funds for a replacement and helping her get back on her feet — and back on her bike.

Gina commented: “When I hit my lowest point, SSAFA helped me rebuild. I wanted to give something back — not just to say thank you, but to make sure other veterans, serving personnel and their families get help when they need it most. Every mile I’ve travelled has been for them, and for my brother. Standing at the foot of Everest with my team was emotional, humbling and exhilarating — the perfect end to a year that changed my life.”

Gina, who has done many other challenges for SSAFA over the years, says the charities kindness during her darkest moment inspired her to dedicate this challenge to them.
