SSAFA’s Project Fire and Ice film shortlisted for Smiley award
15 April 2026
SSAFA is celebrating after its powerful film Project Fire and Ice was shortlisted in the national Smiley Charity Film Awards, the UK’s largest celebration of charity-led storytelling.
Project Fire and Ice was a fundraising campaign for SSAFA, but a test of endurance for four well-known veterans: Jason "Foxy" Fox, Karl Hinett, Brian Wood MC, and Aldo Kane. They took on the elements, and their own sometimes raw emotions, in a 500-kilometre Arctic Ultra, through the snow-covered forests of Swedish Lapland in March 2025.
The film, which is in the longform category, highlights the life changing impact of SSAFA’s work with serving personnel and veterans, as well as their families, has been recognised for its compelling storytelling and emotional resonance.
The Smileys celebrate films that inform, inspire, and drive positive change, with winners determined by a combination of public votes and expert judges.
The public vote is now open - it closes on April 23 - and SSAFA is calling on supporters and the wider public to help the film go all the way by casting their votes for it.
Tony Parker, SSAFA’s Multimedia Content Producer, accompanied the quartet on their challenge to make the film, and said: “Project Fire and Ice didn’t build character, but revealed it, and this film captures the resilience, determination and quiet courage of the Armed Forces community, showing how specialist support can make a lasting difference at moments of real need.
“Through striking visuals and honest, sometimes brutal, personal stories, the film brings to life SSAFA’s mission to ensure that no member of the Armed Forces family ever battles alone.”
He added that being shortlisted for the Smiley Charity Film Awards puts SSAFA alongside some of the UK’s most impactful charities and creative campaigns, commenting: “Public support now plays a vital role in the film’s success. Every vote helps to amplify the voices of the Armed Forces community and raises awareness of the practical, emotional, and financial support SSAFA provides across the UK and overseas.”
