SSAFA and Bradford City Football Club host veterans’ event for EFL Week of Action
06 November 2025
SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, and Bradford City Football Club Community Foundation came together to host a hugely successful event at the City Hub as part of this year’s English Football League (EFL) Week of Action, yesterday, Tuesday 4 November.
The special session – part of the Foundation and SSAFA’s ongoing weekly coffee meet-ups – brought together members of the local Armed Forces community, SSAFA volunteers, and representatives from Bradford City AFC for an afternoon of connection, confidence-building, and camaraderie.
Attendees enjoyed hearing from Bradford City AFC manager Graham Alexander and player Josh Neufville, who spoke about the importance of teamwork, resilience, and community – values shared by both organisations.
Marion Rennie, Branch Support Coordinator for SSAFA West Yorkshire, said: “The event was a real success. We’re so grateful to Bradford City Community Foundation for opening their doors to the veteran community. These sessions are about more than coffee – they’re about building confidence, connection, and friendships that can make a lasting difference. It’s wonderful to see so many people coming together to support each other.”
Mark O’Neill, SSAFA volunteer and veteran beneficiary, said: “Coming here every week has really helped me. You meet people who understand, who’ve been through similar things, and it reminds you that you’re not on your own. Yesterday’s event was brilliant – it showed what can happen when the community comes together.”
Graham Alexander, Bradford City AFC Manager, said: “It was a real privilege to meet the veterans and SSAFA volunteers at the City Hub. You could feel the sense of connection and respect in the room. Football is about teamwork and belonging, and that’s exactly what these sessions create for veterans in our community.”
Josh Neufville, Bradford City AFC player, added: “I really enjoyed chatting to everyone and hearing their stories. It’s great to see how the club and SSAFA are supporting veterans and giving them a place to come together. You can tell how much it means to people.”
Ian Ormondroyd, CEO of the Bradford City Football Club Foundation, added: “We’re proud of our partnership with SSAFA and the impact these weekly sessions are having. Yesterday’s event showed how sport can bring people together, spark conversations, and help veterans feel supported. No one should ever feel they have to battle alone, and it’s brilliant to see that message in action.”
