Scorching conditions, record crowds: more than 1,300 take on 13 Bridges Challenge

More than 1,343 people rallied together to battle the heat and SSAFA’s iconic annual 10-mile challenge - the 13 Bridges Challenge! With trainers tied, suncream applied and water bottles filled, each participant braved the 30° centigrade heat as they raised vital funds for the Armed Forces community.  

On Saturday 27 June 2026, to celebrate Armed Forces Day, London became a sea of SSAFA colours as participants set off on the 13 Bridges Challenge. Starting at Trinity Square Gardens bright and early, walkers tackled the 10-mile route that crossed 13 of London's most iconic bridges. From Tower Bridge to Battersea, SSAFA fundraisers were treated to stunning views of the capital as they made their way along the Thames.

This event is more than just taking in London landmarks and hitting your daily step count – it is about celebrating and honouring veterans, serving personnel and their families. From military families and veterans to serving personnel, corporate teams, and loyal SSAFA supporters, the challenge brought people together for a cause close to many hearts.

Beverley Cartwright, Community Engagement Volunteer with the Inverness-shire and Western Isles branch of SSAFA said: “It was a brilliant morning, the heat was a bit savage but fuelled by ice cream, cheery hellos, high fives from the volunteers en route and the knowledge I had raised money for such a worthy cause made it all worthwhile.”

Raising a record-breaking £176,000, the funds will go directly towards SSAFAs mission - to support those in the Armed Forces community during their time of need because no one should ever battle alone.

Dedicated volunteers lined the streets to provide encouragement, enthusiasm, and practical support like water and snacks. After crossing their final bridge, the walkers continued the celebrations at Wandsworth’s Armed Forces Day in Battersea Park. With food trucks, a bar and an ice cream van on offer, walkers were able to reenergise after their massive efforts. An on-site inflatable obstacle course, bouncy castle, circus-style games, and a dedicated children’s tent meant there was something for everyone to enjoy after completing their epic challenge.

The atmosphere across London has been fantastic and the funds raised will make a real difference to those military families who turn to SSAFA for support.

From walking with us and helping drive equipment to and from the start and finish lines, to managing fun-filled stands at Battersea Park.
