RAF Halton training instructor to take on Everest-sized challenge for SSAFA

29 July 2025

An RAF recruit training instructor from RAF Halton is preparing to scale South Wales’ highest peak ten times in 24 hours - the equivalent of summiting Mount Everest - in an extraordinary challenge to support SSAFA.

Nathan Wilson, 32, will tackle the 886m Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons wearing full military kit, including a 35lb bergen (backpack), aiming to complete the feat in under 23 hours. The ambitious route covers:

  • An elevation gain equivalent to Mount Everest
  • Around 40 miles of tough, rugged terrain
  • Extreme physical and mental endurance - all in support of serving personnel, veterans, and their families

Born in the West Midlands and raised in Norfolk, Nathan joined the RAF in 2020 and became a Recruit Training Instructor at RAF Halton in 2024 - a role he calls “a privilege and a responsibility I take great pride in.”

His military connection runs deep: Both his father and brother served in the Royal Marines, although Nathan jokes that he chose “the easier and comfier life” in the RAF. Even so, his credentials are tough - he’s completed the gruelling Royal Marines Commando Endurance Course, raising funds for The Royal Marines Charity and Devon Air Ambulance.

Nathan says: “The challenge itself isn’t new, but doing it in full weighted kit adds a whole new level of difficulty. I want to push myself while raising awareness for SSAFA and the vital work they do.”

The challenge, dubbed #TenYFan, is scheduled for mid October 2025. Nathan is sharing his training journey on Instagram (@tenyfan082025) and raising funds via JustGiving for SSAFA

Nathan adds: “SSAFA has done some incredible work. At the Festival of Remembrance, I heard veterans’ stories that stuck with me. I wanted to do something tangible - to honour not just those who serve, but their families too.”

Nathan’s training includes hill sprints, loaded runs, and strength workouts - all in full kit and all-weather conditions. “If it ain’t raining, it ain’t training,” he laughs. Family, friends and colleagues are cheering him on - with plenty of banter included.

Outside of service, Nathan is a keen fencer, having won gold and bronze medals in the Novice Cup, and a self-confessed astronomy fan who loves to “glance skywards” whenever he gets the chance.

He hopes to raise at least £1,000 for SSAFA: “If I can smash that target, I’ll be over the moon. Every penny goes towards helping those who’ve already given so much.”

Nathan also plans to livestream parts of the challenge so supporters can cheer him on in real time. Veterans, service families and SSAFA supporters are encouraged to follow his journey and get behind this inspiring endurance effort.
