MBE for SSAFA volunteer in Birthday Honours

04 June 2025

Trevor Scott, a stalwart volunteer for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity has been made a Member of the British Empire (MBE) in the King’s Birthday Honours list 2025.

Trevor (83), originally from Belfast, spent nearly 50 years working in education first in his native city with subsequent positions across secondary and higher education including at King Henry VIII School (Abergavenny), West Monmouth School (Pontypool), and The Open University (Wales). He also enjoyed Art Fellowships at Skidmore College (Saratoga Springs, New York) in 1992, 1994, and 1997.

Trevor was introduced to SSAFA by one of his daughters – he has two, and four grandchildren – who volunteered for the charity when her husband was in the British Army.

Beginning in 2008 as a caseworker in the former Gwent branch, he became Abergavenny Divisional Secretary in 2018, Chair of the Gwent branch in 2020, and Chair of the South East Wales branch (following a merger of Gwent, Cardiff & The Vale, and Mid Glamorgan branches) from 2022 until October 2024. Trevor remains both active and well-respected supporting SSAFA’s Wales Regional Office with the beneficiary feedback survey.

In the citation for his MBE is stated: “Trevor is an outstanding ambassador and committed volunteer for SSAFA, volunteering in Wales for almost 20 years.

“The impact of Trevor’s selfless commitment and dedication in this voluntary role has quite literally been life changing and in some cases, lifesaving for so many families from the Armed Forces community.

“What Trevor has managed to achieve while generously giving his time for SSAFA goes far beyond volunteering. He has singlehandedly safeguarded the continued success of the SSAFA Branch in South East Wales.”

Trevor, whose eclectic interests include sport, jazz, reading, photography, and film, commented: “To be nominated was an honour in itself, but to be awarded an MBE was a shock – albeit a very pleasant one.

“SSAFA is an outstanding armed forces charity, and it has been my privilege to work alongside many dedicated volunteers and staff, especially SSAFA's Steve Boswell, in order to support veterans in need.

“My award therefore also belongs to the SSAFA team, especially those in the South East Wales branch, without whose commitment nothing would have been achieved.”

All at SSAFA send their sincere congratulations to Trevor for his outstanding – and continuing – service to the Armed Forces community, and for his richly deserved MBE.
