Former Army mechanic from Norfolk to do 100-mile Tour de Broads fundraiser for SSAFA

Kieran Palmer, ex-Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) mechanic is preparing to take on a challenging 100-mile bike ride in the ‘Tour de Broads’ annual cycling event on Sunday 17 August, to raise funds and awareness for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.

Kieran, 26, from Wendling, Norfolk, served nearly five years with 15 Signal Regiment, attached to the Arms Support Squadron. His mechanical expertise, honed before joining the Army, was a key asset in his role. Throughout multiple overseas exercises, including four consecutive deployments in Germany, Kieran thrived under pressure and built lifelong friendships.

Due to mental health issues, Kieran was discharged from the Army - a challenging transition that could have held him back. However, with the help of SSAFA, he received crucial support, including assistance in purchasing the specialist tools he needed to work independently as a technician. This support gave him the confidence and means to rebuild his career.

Today, Kieran works full-time for heavy plant suppliers Finning Caterpillar, travelling across the East of England to service and repair heavy machinery. The equipment he works on is highly specialised and this job has brought back the sense of purpose and mobility he once found in the Army.

Kieran commented: “This is a huge challenge but one I’m proud to face. This ride is about more than just the miles – it’s about giving back to SSAFA, who helped me get back on my feet when I needed it the most. I want to raise £500, at least, but also to spread the word about the incredible work that SSAFA do for veterans like me.”

Kieran’s parents and younger brother are fully behind his fundraising efforts and will be supporting him on the day. His father, uncle and cousin are taking turns to ride with him, each taking on a 25 mile stretch of the 100-mile ride. Together, they plan to make this annual event a new family tradition, alongside other runs such as the London to Brighton Cycle.

Outside work, Kieran shares his life with “Chally,” a Hungarian Vizsla who provides energetic companionship and support.

This is Kieran’s first fundraiser, and his passion to give back reflects his gratitude towards SSAFA’s role in helping him regain his independence and confidence.
