Ashford's Poppy Tribute

06 August 2019

Taking inspiration from the hugely popular 'Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red' poppy installation at the Tower of London in 2014, sculptured metal poppies were planted to create a stunning visual display and an overnight military guard of honour was held.

Residents were offered the opportunity to purchase the poppies that would be planted and, if they wish, collect them after the event to keep as a permanent reminder of the historic occasion. Each poppy cost £6, with a percentage of each sale being donated to SSAFA. This fantastic initiative raised from the sale of the poppies £4,950 but an Ashford resident got in touch and asked if they could donate a further £50 directly to add to this total, bringing the final figure to £5,000.

SSAFA Kent gives a huge vote of thanks to Ashford Borough Council for organising this splendid initiative with particular thanks to Cllr Stephen Dehnel MBE, the Council’s Military Champion.
