SSAFA Devon continual support during Covid-19

SSAFA Devon provides support to all members of the Armed Forces, including reserves, both past and present, as well as members of their immediate family, and has continued to support members of the Armed Forces during the pandemic.

But the Covid-19 pandemic has meant that branch fundraising activities and organised events have been cancelled, resulting in a lack of funds for the charity as a whole and our branch. We rely on the generous donations of the local Devonshire people, as well as fundraising from local events, individuals and legacies.

Our branch has had to adapt to the ongoing restrictions following the Covid-19 pandemic to continue to support veterans and their families. SSAFA Devon volunteers are now utilising virtual support, such as phone calls or social distanced meetings where possible.

Martyn Evans, the SSAFA Teignmouth team leader said:

“I’m bowled over by the commitment and determination of our volunteers and caseworkers. Despite all odds they are delivering life-changing support care for those in need in our area.”

The branch is also seeking new volunteer caseworkers to assist the branch with their ongoing support for the Armed Forces community. A military background is not essential, and no previous experience is necessary as full training is provided at Wyvern Barracks in Exeter.

SSAFA Devon was recently awarded the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS) which is equivalent to an MBE and is the highest award given to local volunteer groups across the UK to recognise outstanding work done in their own communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate the anniversary of The Queen's coronation. Devon is one of only three SSAFA branches in the country to have received the QAVS.
