‘June Best Sanctuary Garden’ officially opens in Lympstone

22 July 2025

SSAFA Devon, in partnership with the Gordon Messenger Centre (GMC) is proud to announce the official opening of the June Best Sanctuary Garden, a tranquil retreat in Lympstone built in memory of dedicated SSAFA caseworker June Best.

The inauguration ceremony took place on 10 July 2025. Minister for Veterans and People Alistair Cairns MP, General Sir Gordon Messenger, and Aldo Kane, The Royal Marines Charity (TRMC) Ambassador, were the guests of honour, unveiling a large commemorative stone that bears the name of the garden.

June Best left a lasting legacy characterised by her unwavering commitment to supporting military personnel and their families. Following her passing, a gift from her estate was used to create this beautiful garden, which serves as a serene and therapeutic space for both the military and former military community.

Work on the garden started in 2024 and has been meticulously developed over the past few months, with the opening date purposefully delayed to allow the various plants and trees to become well-established, creating an inviting environment for visitors. The garden has successfully transformed the area into a haven for relaxation, connection, and healing.

The garden was designed and delivered by international community development company, Splash Projects (veteran-based) situated in Exmouth and whose expert team facilitated the build.

An incredible 250 volunteers came together under the ethos of “by veterans for veterans” to bring the garden to life. This collaborative effort signifies the strong bonds within the military community and the commitment to supporting one another through shared experiences.

Mark Tyrrell-Smith, chair of SSAFA’s Devon branch said: “It was incredibly satisfying to finally see the garden officially opened by the Minister for Veterans and People. This journey started almost exactly two years ago, and whilst it has taken a great deal of hard work and dedication from many volunteers, it has resulted in this incredible space which was designed and built by veterans, for veterans; and has confirmed all the hard work was clearly worth it.

"This has been a fantastic example of innovation in the way a branch can meet the needs of our beneficiaries, and I am very proud that SSAFA Devon has led the way with social investment in partnership with the GMC, TRMC and Armed Forces Community Support Hub Devon.”

Lisa-Joy Peake, Manager at the GMC said: “The June Best Sanctuary Garden is a beautiful addition to the centre. It’s a peaceful, uplifting space that our veterans, staff and visitors can enjoy all year round. We’re so proud to have this garden here – it’s already become a much-loved feature and a real asset to everyone’s well-being.

"The official unveiling was such a poignant moment, showcasing the powerful synergy between our veteran community, families and serving personnel with local businesses, residents and charities. This garden, built by their hands, stands now as a living tribute to their service and a testament to what can be achieved when people work together, particularly moving when it is to support those who have given so much.

"A special thank you to SSAFA Devon for supporting the vision and for their unwavering support."
