  • Veterans' New Sunday Lunch Club

The West Yorkshire Branch of SSAFA The Armed Forces Charity is to host a monthly Veterans’ Monthly Lunch Club, starting on Sunday 1st July 2018.

The West Yorkshire Branch of SSAFA The Armed Forces Charity is to host a monthly Veterans’ Monthly Lunch Club, starting on Sunday 1st July 2018.

The Sunday Lunch Club will be held on the first Sunday of each month, 12.30 for 1pm sitting. The menu will be hearty home cooked food, which will be freshly prepared on site and consist of a two-course meal.
The Club, to be held in St Mary’s Church Hall, Commercial Street Morley LS27 8HY is open to Veterans’ and their immediate family as well as members of the Armed Forces who are currently serving.

There will be an unlimited supply of Tea and Coffee and the opportunity for Veterans’ to socialise and meet old and new friends.

    The Chairman of SSAFA The Armed Forces Charity West Yorkshire Branch, Terry Grayshon commented;

“YouGov research commissioned by SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity has found that more than two in five (41 per cent) of British Armed Forces veterans surveyed have felt lonely or isolated at some point since leaving the military.
More than three in ten of the veterans polled admitted (31 per cent) they have just one or no close friends and would be unlikely to discuss any feelings of loneliness with a family member or close friend (53 per cent), suggesting a limited support network for these veterans.

The most common reasons veterans gave for feeling lonely and isolated included: losing touch with friends in the Armed Forces (41 per cent), physical or mental health issues (33 per cent), and struggling to relate to anyone in civilian life (23 per cent).

The introduction of our Sunday Lunch Club will allow for Veterans’ of all ages to come together over a home cooked hearty meal to socialise with others who have served Queen and Country.

The YouGov Survey brought up some worrying statistics and in West Yorkshire we wanted to do something proactive and address the problem of isolation within the Veteran community.
I hope that our Sunday Lunch Club, which is being run on a pay as you feel basis with donations to SSAFA, will help bring Veterans together and give them the opportunity to socialise”.

All Veterans and Serving Personnel are welcome to attend the Sunday Lunch Club, for catering purposes SSAFA The Armed Forces Charity would like attendees to advise them of their attendance by calling 0345 2 415 600 (local rate call) or by e-mailing

For further details of the Lunch Club please call 0345 2 415 600 (local rate call) or e-mail

  • Keighley Veterans' Donatation to SSAFA

    Our Thanks for their donation

VETERANS from Keighley have united to donate cash for armed forces charity SSAFA.

Members of three regimental associations chipped in to raise £100 to help comrades living with injury and illness.

The regimental associations of the Yorkshire Regiment, the Yorkshire Volunteers and the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment meet each month at Keighley Drill Hall.

They recently invited Phil Kendall from the Keighley division of SSAFA – formerly the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association – to receive the money.

Mr Kendall said: “We are extremely grateful for the kind donations and support, which all goes towards SSAFA being able to provide assistance for our ex-forces community, and their dependents, when they are most in need.

“The people of Keighley are very supportive of us. The generosity of several local publicans and their patrons, in particular the Volunteer Arms, as well as many kind-hearted individuals, enables us to continue our work on their behalf.”

The joint Regimental Association enjoys an active and friendly membership, with the veterans meeting on the last Friday of every month.

The Association members would be more than happy to welcome anyone who had ever served with the local Regular or Territorial Army forces.

nyone interested in joining should contact Dave Connor by emailing or call 07528 672114 for further information.

The Keighley division of SSAFA is also based at the Drill Hall, in Lawkholme Lane, and anyone in need of help should email or call 01535 669354. Office hours are Monday to Friday from 10.30am to 3pm.

SSAFA is one of the largest military charities, founded in 1885 to support serving and ex-serving Armed Forces personnel and their dependents.

Branches and divisions cover every area of the UK, as well as overseas wherever the Forces save.

A spokesman said: “SSAFA has teams of caring, highly-trained and dedicated volunteer caseworkers, meeting people in their own homes, responding to requests and enquiries, identifying their needs, and providing important help whether financial, practical and emotional.

With thanks to the Keighley News
