On this ambitious East African Challenge, we will take the Timau route making our way across different microclimates and landscapes including heathland, forest, pristine mountain, moorland grass and snow with an eye-popping chance of spotting mountain wildlife.

We will plumb the depths of our endurance skill in land and water activities spending a day at an army adventure training camp in the heart of Ngare Ndare Forest following in the footsteps of over 30,000 British Army and Royal Air Force personnel. Day 8 will see us working the hardest part of the trek - culminating in a sub-zero hike to a glacial summit.

What to expect:

Once you're signed up and joined Team SSAFA, we will be on hand throughout the lead-up to the trip to help you with your fundraising. We can help by providing ideas, tips, materials and anything else you may need to reach your target! We will also be able to offer some tips and advice on how to prep for the trip itself!

Starting with a flight from London, this 10-day trip will feature 5 days of solid trekking – feasting our eyes on beautiful mountain landscapes, wildflowers, birdlife, sunsets and sunrises, resting and refreshing at idyllic camps and culminating with the final summit attempt amid sub-zero temperatures. Early on in our journey we will have 1 day at a British Army Adventure Training Camp testing our bravery on everything from rock climbing and canyoning to mountain biking and rope skills.

There will also be the opportunity for an extra fee, to attend a 2-day safari before flying home.

At the end of your trek, you will receive a well-deserved medal and a dinner to celebrate your fantastic achievement.

Itinerary:

Day1 (30 September)

Depart London Heathrow for overnight flight to Nairobi.

Day 2 (1 October)

Arrive Nairobi early morning. We will be met and transferred to Nanyuki town at the foot of Mount Kenya (at 1950m).  The afternoon will be spent preparing for the trek with a short acclimatisation walk.  After dinner we will have a full trek briefing about the adventure ahead.

Day 3 (2 October)

Today, we have the exciting opportunity to experience a British Army adventurous training camp in the middle of the forest.  From rock climbing and canyoning to mountain biking, bushcraft, and rope skills, there’s a challenge for everyone.  We will also hear from an active member of BATUK (British Army Training Unit Kenya), the permanent unit based in Nanyuki.

Day 4 (3 October)

After breakfast we transfer to Rutunda.  After meeting our guides and porters our slow climb begins through heathland and the forest.  Once at camp, it’s time to rest and acclimatise.

Day 5 (4 October)

Today’s route is through open heathland, and we have the chance of seeing some unique mountain wildlife such as zebra, buffalo and even the occasional elephant! We will set up camp besides a mountain stream and soak in the incredible local beauty.

Day 6 (5 October)

A beautiful day’s hike exploring the pristine mountain area.  We enter the moorland zone walking towards the peaks ahead that make up the Mount Kenya Massif.  We reach Major’s Camp late afternoon, which is located at the base of the valley near some very dramatic rock faces.  There is some great birdlife in this area and even sightings of the rare Serval cat!

Day 7 (6 October)

Another stunning day’s hike, which sees us finish at the base of the old volcanic plug that makes up the rocky peaks of Batian, Nelion and Point Lenana.  The vegetation changes to moorland grass with small flowering plants and Sunbirds flitting among the bizarre giant Groundsel and Lobelia plants.  Once at camp we will have an earlier dinner and prepare for tomorrow early summit attempt and sub-zero temperatures!

Day 8 (7 October)

An early 3am start sees us on the Summit Circuit Path.  Stunning views, tarns, glaciers, ice carved rock formations and precipitous valleys and the views!  Although, the climb is straightforward, the final section is hard work at this altitude and involves some scrambling sections.  In the distance it is easy to mistake Kilimanjaro for a high cloud - until you look more closely and realise it is the snow-capped summit 320km away!  After watching the spectacular sunrise over Africa and celebrating our mighty achievement, we start our descent back down to on the Sirimon route and have a long hike down to Old Moses camp.  A hugely challenging but rewarding day!

Day 9 (8 October)

Time this morning to enjoy our stunning African surroundings, before we are transferred back to Nairobi for our overnight flight.  (Or you can stay for the optional 2-day safari.)

You will only need to carry your day sack (approx. 30 litres) whilst trekking which should contain everything you need for that day: waterproofs, snacks, warm fleece and 2 litres of water (this can be refilled at the lunch stop).  Your main bag, which is carried by porters each day (max 12 kg) will contain your sleeping bag, spare sleeping mat, spare clothes, toiletries etc.  We will provide you with a detailed packing checklist once you have signed up.

We will have a team of cooks on the mountain preparing fresh food every day.  You will be eating lots of carbohydrates e.g. pasta and potato.  Plenty of cereals, bread, fresh fruit, vegetables, and eggs, plus some meat.  All the water on trek will be treated with water purification tablets.

At the beginning and end of the trek you will be staying in a forest lodge – room configuration will be between 4-6 people with an en suite bathroom.  On the mountain you will be in 2-person mountain tents.  (There is an option after the trek to stay on for a 2-day safari at a 4* tented safari camp.)

Walking is something most of us do every day, however trekking over mountainous, desert and mixed terrain, whether it’s over 3 or 15 days requires a good level of commitment to a training plan.  Remember the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy your challenge.  Once you have signed up you will be sent a trekking training plan to get you ready for the event.

While you can’t fully replicate high altitude at home, the best way to prepare is by building strong cardiovascular fitness through regular hiking, walking uphill with a backpack, and maintaining a steady pace—this helps your body cope better with lower oxygen levels and makes the altitude more manageable when you’re on the mountain.  Once you sign up for the trek, we’ll send you more detailed information about the altitude and practical tips to help you prepare and feel confident for the trek.

We will send you a detailed packing checklist once you have signed up, but you will need a good pair of walking boots, waterproofs and a warm sleeping bag.  Some kit can be hired to help you keep the cost down.

Yes. To travel overseas you will need a valid passport with at least six (6) months of remaining validity.  You will also be required to apply for a Kenya Visa which will cost approximately $50.

We will be walking with local guides who know the area and terrain like the back of their hand, they will lead the trek.  They will be English-speaking high-altitude Mountain guides, and we will also have a UK High Altitude expedition doctor with us to support when needed.

We appreciate that this is a high fundraising target which is why we recommend signing up as soon as possible to give you the most time to fundraise.  We work very closely with our trekkers to ensure they reach their fundraising targets, we hold monthly team calls where we provide you with ideas to reach your goal.  We also send out monthly emails with fundraising ideas for that month and also set up a What’s App group for all our trekkers where you can share your ideas and what has worked well for you.  If you are struggling with your fundraising, we are also always available to have a one-to-one chat and provide you with any advice or materials you may need.  Our PR team can also support you with hints and tips on trying to get local radio interviews and stories in the local papers to boost your fundraising.

Each day of trekking will bring something new, with varying terrain and scenery.  We begin gently, easing into the journey with a 7km hike that includes a 500m ascent.  On Day 2, we cover 10km with a 450m climb.  Day 3 steps it up with a 13km trek and a 650m ascent, while Day 4 is shorter at 8km but steeper, with 800m of climbing.

The final day is the ultimate challenge and reward: summit day.  We set off at 3am to reach the peak of Mount Kenya in time for a breathtaking sunrise over Africa.  This day covers 18.5km in total, with a final 485m push to the summit, followed by a demanding 1,600m descent back down to the park gates.  It’s a long journey—13 to 14 hours on foot—but it promises to be one of the most unforgettable experiences of your life.

This is a charity trek, not a race - and the focus is on teamwork and shared experience.  No one will be left behind; we’ll complete the journey together as a group.  Our experienced local guides lead from both the front and back, setting a deliberately slow and steady pace that’s ideal for trekking safely at high altitude.  This helps keep everyone together and comfortable.  We’ll also take regular rest stops along the way to refuel with a snack, take photos, and enjoy the stunning views.

Climbing Mount Kenya offers a diverse and ever-changing terrain that keeps each day of trekking unique and engaging.  The trails range from well-maintained, wide paths to narrower, rugged mountain tracks, with sections of uneven ground, rocky scrambles, and loose scree that require careful footing.  As we ascend, the landscape transitions from lush montane forest to open moorland, eventually giving way to stark alpine desert and dramatic rock formations.  The final push to the summit is the most challenging, with steep inclines, potentially snow-dusted scree, and large boulders that require some hands-on scrambling.  While not technically difficult, this last stretch demands focus and determination - but the reward of witnessing the sun rise over the African plains from the summit is an unforgettable experience that makes every step worthwhile.

Flights, transfers, accommodation and full board are included in this package.  The only things you have to pay for is your Visa, personal travel insurance, personal gratuities, lunch on day 2 and day 8, and the optional safari.

Your registration fee and fundraising target cover you for everything not listed above for the first 9 days of the trek.  After that there is an option to extend your stay and include a two-day safari.

If you do extend you will receive 2 nights full board at a 4* safari camp, all park fees, and 4 game drives for an additional £950 pp (based on twin share).

Sweetwaters Serena boasts stunning views of Mount Kenya and fantastic game viewing in the private Ol Pejeta conservancy.  Home to the largest black rhino conservancy in East Africa, Ol Pejeta is an exceptional place to embark on your safari adventure.  The camp’s bar and dining room, aptly named the Rhino Dining Room, has huge windows overlooking the local watering hole, so you can watch wildlife while enjoying your meals.  Visit the Endangered Species Enclosure to learn about rhino conservation or meet the rescued animals at the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary - the only one in Kenya.
