SSAFA Cardiff 5K road race series returns for 27th year

31 March 2026

Runners from across the country are being invited to take part in the Cardiff 5K Road Race Series, which returns this summer for its 27th year in support of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.

The established three-race series raises funds for the SSAFA South East Wales branch while attracting a strong competitive field. Held under UK & Welsh Athletics rules and featuring on the Cardiff athletics calendar, the races have become a respected fixture in the summer running calendar.

Each race is limited to 400 runners and entries are allocated on a first come, first served basis. The current course records stand at 14:24 (Men) and 15:29 (Women), underlining the competitive standard regularly seen at the event.

Founded in 1998 by Graham Finlayson BEM following 28 years’ service with 2nd (V) Battalion the Royal Regiment of Wales, the series continues to combine competitive racing with fundraising for the Armed Forces community.

Michael Wheeler, South East Wales Branch Chair, said: “The Cardiff 5K Series has built a strong reputation over many years. We see competitive club runners chasing personal bests alongside others taking part for the first time. Every entry supports SSAFA South East Wales and the work we do locally for serving personnel, veterans and their families. We encourage runners of all abilities to sign up and be part of this year’s series.”

The 2026 race dates are:

  • Wednesday 20 May
  • Wednesday 3 June
  • Wednesday 22 July

All races begin at 19:30, with Race HQ based at the Blackweir Tavern in Cardiff. Runners may enter one, two or all three races.

Funds raised through the series will directly support SSAFA South East Wales in providing practical, financial and emotional support to members of the Armed Forces community when they need it most.
