SSAFA supporter commemorates the Somme with fundraising challenge

A Perthshire reservist is paying tribute to those who fell in one of the most infamous battles of the First World War with a gruelling charity trek.

Kalim Rehman, 56, is trekking 500 kilometres over six months for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity to help support fellow Forces personnel, veterans, and families.

In addition to battling the Scottish winter weather conditions, the Kinross-based veteran is tackling his mission while carrying a 60lb pack. The pack emulates the weight a typical infantry soldier would have carried over the top during the Battle of the Somme, which ended in an Allied victory 109 years ago [on 18th November 1916].

The battle is widely recognised as one of the largest and deadliest of the First World War, responsible for over 57,000 British casualties on its first day and responsible for devastating losses for several Scottish battalions.

A serving reservist of eight years with The Rifles and Royal Regiment of Scotland, preceded by a career in the regular Army with the Parachute Regiment, Kalim’s military training has helped him prepare for the 10km hikes he’s undertaking whatever the weather, six days a week.

The dad-of-one said he was inspired to take on the challenge to raise awareness of SSAFA and the needs of serving personnels’ families among the civilian community.

Kalim said: “That family angle is the most important. Forces families are normal people, and many Forces spouses don’t even have a military connection apart from their wife or husband who is serving.

“By raising money for SSAFA I’m not just benefitting serving personnel, but civilians. If the money I raise can be put to good use, even just for one family, then mission accomplished.”

Nigel Gallier, Chair of SSAFA’s Perth and Kinross branch, said:

“Local supporters like Kalim are an invaluable asset to SSAFA, helping to raise awareness of the vital work we do and raising funds so we can continue to support the Armed Forces community.

“At SSAFA we understand that behind every uniform is a person, and we are here for that person and their family whenever and however they need us so they never battle alone.

“Kalim’s challenge and the reasons behind it demonstrate the importance of that mission. We wish him every success and would encourage everyone who feels able to support him however they can.”
