Loss of a loved one

Get support from SSAFA during your bereavement

You just never think it will be you that needs help. The last couple of years have certainly given me a new outlook on life.

- Mandy, RAF Veteran

How can SSAFA help me when a loved one has passed away?

Losing a loved one can be an incredibly difficult and overwhelming experience. At a time when you are coping with grief, it can also be hard to know where to turn for support or how to navigate the services available.

If you lose someone who has previously served in the Armed Forces, or you currently serving or are ex-Forces and experience a bereavement, SSAFA can help you understand the support that may be available and connect you with appropriate organisations and services.

Depending on your circumstances, this may include signposting to specialist emotional support, bereavement services, practical assistance, or financial support. Everyone's experience of grief is different, and the support needed will vary from person to person. If your personal circumstances change following your loss, SSAFA may be able to help identify sources of practical or financial assistance and guide you towards organisations best placed to meet your needs.

Family members who have been bereaved by the death of a serving person or veteran may also wish to connect with our Support Groups for Bereaved Families. These groups provide opportunities to meet others with shared experiences and access peer support.
