Transitional mentoring for service leavers
Our mentoring helps motivate, support, build resilience and empower service leavers, their families or spouses - to fulfil their potential in their new lives outside of the military.
My mentor Lesley has been helpful in so many ways. When we first started meeting I just didn’t have a positive mental attitude. I was feeling a bit lost and isolated.
- Tracy, Army Veteran
What help can the SSAFA Mentoring Team provide?
With a non-judgmental holistic approach, we support all aspects of transition including practical support with housing, navigating the NHS, employment and training, providing a listening ear, supporting self-confidence, building resilience and reducing isolation and loneliness.
The SSAFA Mentoring team provides support from 6 months before discharge to 3 years after discharge. Mentoring support can last 12-18 months or for as long as a goal is being worked towards. Each service leaver is paired with a dedicated volunteer mentor who supports and guides them through their transition.
We work collaboratively with DWP, NHS, Royal Navy, the Royal Marines, the British Army, the Royal Air Force and other key partners to ensure the correct support is available.
The aim of the service is to empower, guide and support transition by sharing knowledge and skills, whilst building self-confidence, self-esteem and resilience along the way. Supporting a change of mindset from the military to their new civilian environment.
