Our commitment is to provide support with experienced, non-judgemental and friendly advice, as well as a variety of practical services that cover a range of emotional, practical and financial issues. We are proud to say that we help our Armed Forces family whenever they need us, for as long as they need us. Here at SSAFA Dumfries and Galloway, we have a variety of different personalities that together make our team so special.

Liam Wallace

Branch Secretary, Caseworker and interim Branch Chair

Liam comes from a military background and has also served in the Armed Forces. Through his experience, he witnessed the challenges veterans and their families face when transitioning to civilian life. Motivated to make a meaningful contribution, he dedicated himself to supporting their well-being. Recognising the significant positive impact of SSAFA’s interventions, Liam began volunteering in 2022 as a caseworker. His commitment and dedication led him to serve as the branch secretary, and he now holds the position of interim branch chairman.

Joe Biggans

Caseworker

Joe is an RAF veteran and a dedicated part-time therapist with a strong passion for helping others. His personal and professional experiences have shaped his commitment to supporting individuals in need, particularly within the veteran community. Believing that his skills and values align with SSAFA’s mission, Joe joined SSAFA in 2023 to make a meaningful impact. He takes great pride in assisting veterans and their families by navigating the complexities of military funding, ensuring they receive the financial support they deserve during difficult times. Through his role, he finds immense fulfillment in advocating for those who have served, helping them regain stability and improve their quality of life.

Debra Willox

Caseworker

Debra has been serving with SSAFA for over 2 years, initially joining as a volunteer after completing her university studies. She saw this as an opportunity not only to build her confidence but also to contribute meaningfully to the well-being of others. Her passion for helping people led her to SSAFA, where she could actively support those facing significant life transitions. Working closely with individuals from diverse backgrounds has given Debra valuable insight into the unique challenges veterans and their families encounter when transitioning to civilian life. She has witnessed firsthand the difficulties they face, from securing financial assistance to adapting to new career paths and rebuilding their sense of community. Being part of SSAFA has been a deeply rewarding experience. She takes great pride in making a positive impact on the lives of veterans, ensuring they receive the support they need during critical times. Seeing the difference our efforts make reinforces her dedication to this work, and she remains committed to standing by those who have served when they need it most.

Inga McVicar

Caseworker

Inga joined SSAFA in 2022, serving as a dedicated caseworker for Dumfries and Galloway branch, helping to provide critical support to veterans and their families in our communities. This deeply rewarding work has allowed Inga to witness firsthand the tangible impact of compassionate support, whether helping a veteran to access housing, securing medical care or simply offering a listening ear. According to Inga, veterans have sacrificed so much for our nation, and it is both moral obligation and a profound privilege to serve them in return. Through this experiences, Inga has gained invaluable skills in case management, crisis intervention and many more while building strong connections with the brave veterans who have served our nation.
