Woodland Wellbeing at Remembrance

14 November 2019

SSAFA Dorset runs a Woodland Wellbeing Project at Livability in Holton Lee, helping service veterans who are experiencing difficulties dealing with life. The well-being courses each last 6 weeks, and have been running for a year, led by Bob Perry. The format is: the attendees have a brew, and “shoot the breeze” with sea/army stories, or just talk. They can also learn new skills including coppicing, whittling wood and cooking on campfires. This helps to increase overall mental well-being, and instil a sense of calm.

The group met on Remembrance Day at 11:00 to commemorate the fallen. There were no parades or local dignitaries, but there was an RAF padre and bugler.

A few weeks ago local TV chef Sarah Ali Choudhury showed the group how to cook a superb curry with everyone taking part. On this Remembrance occasion, the group prepared a lunch, with all involved – the dish was pasta al fresco.

The group were joined for the two minutes of reflection by a group of young people with learning difficulties. The day was a great success.

A unique experience for everyone in a magical and very special location.
