Shop Team Leader

Do you enjoy meeting new people and working as part of a team? Are you organised with great customer service skills? If so, we would love to hear from you! No previous retail experience is required as full training will be provided.

The SSAFA Shop in Poole raises essential funds which are used to provide services and support to those serving personnel, veterans and their families who require assistance in Dorset.

As a Shop Team Leader you will coordinate and supervise a small group of volunteer team members with the support of a dedicated Shop Manager. Together you will ensure the effective running of SSAFA’s shop operations.

SSAFA has been supporting the Armed Forces community for more than 130 years. Our beneficiaries come from all backgrounds and age groups and the number of people contacting us for help rises each year. In recognition of their service to the Nation we aim to provide financial, practical and emotional support when it’s needed most. To do this we need excellent administrators keeping things running efficiently behind the scenes.

What training and support will you recieve?

  • Local training and induction which will guide you through everything you need to know about becoming a Shop Team Leader.
  • Training modules to complete at home in your own time, so you are up to date on how to keep people and their personal information safe.  
  • Access to a range of e-learning courses as well as local opportunities to keep your knowledge and skills up to date.  
  • Support from the SSAFA Shop Manager and other SSAFA volunteers.
  • Regular meetings and events to learn and share information.  
  • Reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses.
  • Volunteers will be covered by SSAFA's Public Liability insurance while carrying out their role.

What skills or experience are we looking for?

  • Friendly and approachable people with great communication skills.
  • Reliability and willingness to work as part of a team.
  • A willingness to adhere to organisational and local shop policies and procedures.

Yes. Two character references from people who know you well (not family members).   You will be asked to provide references after you complete the initial application form below.

What you'll do

Key role responsibilities

  • Being a key holder – opening and or closing the shop.
  • Giving guidance and support – supporting the induction of new volunteers and ensuring that Team Members feel supported and are clear about their tasks throughout their shift.
  • Overseeing day to day shop operations – ensuring Team Members fulfil tasks such as welcoming and serving customers, replenishing stock, accepting and sorting donations and making the shop look attractive to encourage sales.
  • Handling money - cashing up the till at shift handovers or at the end of the day.
  • Health and Safety - ensuring all areas are kept clean and free from hazards, reporting and recording any incidents to the Shop Manager.
  • Customer service and problem solving – handling customer requests/complaints in the absence of the Manager.
