What to expect:

On this expedition to the Sierra Nevada - "the snow-covered mountains" - you will join other SSAFA supporters, staff and expert trail guides on an incredible hike alongside mountain rivers, through green valleys before ascending Mount Mulhacén - but don't worry, we will be climbing the gentle southern flank; no rock climbing required!

Sign up with Team SSAFA and we will support you all the way to the top of the mountain!  We will provide you with training advice for the trek, but also great tips, ideas and materials to support you in your fundraising.

Our SSAFA Treks are fantastic adventures, taking us to new parts of the world, seeing incredible landscapes and making memories that will last a lifetime - and, of course, help us raise funds to support our life-changing work within the Armed Forces community.

Itinerary:

Day 1 - 8 September - Arrival & Briefing

After landing, we’ll transfer to Capileira (1,450m) in the heart of the Alpujarras at the Sierra Nevada foothills. Once checked into our hotel, enjoy a welcome dinner and trek briefing, along with warm Spanish hospitality as we prepare for the adventure ahead.

Day 2 - 9 September – Poqueira Valley Circuit

Our adventure begins with a scenic trek around the Poqueira Valley, passing through three picturesque whitewashed villages. We’ll follow historic bridle paths, cross rivers, and walk through beautiful Holm Oak and Chestnut forests. After a full day exploring this stunning region, we return to Capileira for dinner and another night at our hotel.

Day 3 - 10 September 2026 - Capileira to Poqueira Refuge (2,500m)

After a traditional Spanish breakfast, we begin the first major ascent of the trek. Leaving Capileira (1,450m), we follow the Poqueira Gorge into open mountain terrain above the tree line, with our first glimpse of Mulhacén (3,482m). After 5-6 hours of trekking, we reach the Poqueira Refuge (2,500m), a protected area rich with flowers, streams, and stunning views. Here we’ll relax, enjoy a hearty meal, and prepare for tomorrow’s summit challenge. Accommodation is in shared dormitories with bunks.

Day 4 - 11 September - Summit Mulhacén & Transfer to Granada

Today we tackle the highest peak in mainland Spain - Mount Mulhacén (3,482m)! After leaving the refuge, we ascend to the summit for breathtaking views of the Sierra Nevada and Granada. We then descend via La Caldera (3,000m) and follow the ridge to Prado Llano ski station before transferring to Granada (35km). In the evening, we’ll celebrate our achievement with drinks and dinner, followed by time to explore this beautiful city.

Day 5 - 12 September - Depart Granada & Return to London

Before our flight back to the UK, there may be time to explore the cultural treasures of Granada - often called Spain’s most beautiful city. Then we transfer to Malaga Airport for our journey home.
