Bootle runner takes on London Marathon for SSAFA

26 August 2021

Steven Hughes, 32, from Bootle, will be running 26.2 miles around the Capital this October to raise funds for SSAFA.

The Virgin Money London Marathon will take place on Sunday 3rd October 2021, beginning near Blackheath in Greenwich and finishing at Buckingham Palace.

Coming from a strong military tradition, Steve decided to raise money for SSAFA after hearing for himself about its help and mentoring support to the Armed Forces community.

A project manager with Crossfield Group Ltd, Steve said: “Working in the construction sector, I heard about SSAFA when my company developed a Liverpool building for social housing, following its use by SSAFA and the North West Reserve Forces & Cadets Association. I was overwhelmed to hear about the charity’s support to the Services.

“Although I myself haven’t been in the Forces, my grandfather did boxing during his national service, winning numerous medals, and my father made the England and Royal Navy judo squads while serving.

“So, as well as being passionate about fitness myself, I want to help SSAFA support the Service community via the money I raise.”

Outside work, Steve is now training for the Marathon with his local running club, the Marsh Lane Harriers.

Steve added: “I’m keen to raise as much money as possible to support SSAFA. I’ve already raised over £1,500 of my £2,000 target, but I’m hoping to smash that soon and then aim for £4,000.

“I’m grateful to everyone who has donated and to Crossfield Group for sponsoring me”.

Please feel free to call our Forcesline if you need any support.
