A Word from Maj Gen R V Searby - Branch Chairman
SSAFA Central London Branch is by a long stretch the busiest of the 92 SSAFA volunteer Branches. Its area reaches east to west from Woolwich to Hammersmith, and north to south from Haringey to Lewisham. It is a huge inner city conurbation which is undergoing dramatic change and the issues we face reflect this.
We number 83 volunteers. They are unpaid, selfless workers who give freely of their time helping those in distress and need. Many of them operate in areas where we can only permit them to work in daylight. We also run the National Homelessness Division on behalf of SSAFA. Our Gurkha population is probably the biggest in the UK and is undeniably the busiest.
Last year our Branch carried out 2951 visits and dealt with 1194 cases of distress and need. Our caseworkers managed to raise £1.1 million from donor charities and the Government for benevolent disbursements.
We are very proud that our administration costs amount to less than 8% of this.
