FORGETTING THE PHONE COULD MAKE YOU FEEL MORE POSITIVE

22 January 2020

Given the choice, more than 41% of the population would be prepared to do something meaningful to help others rather than spend time on their mobile phones, drying the dishes or queuing for a bus.

That’s one of the most positive findings in research carried out for SSAFA, Britain’s longest established Forces charity. Not so constructive is a discovery at the other end of the spectrum, which ascertained that a similar number often wish they were doing something more meaningful with their time and 25% feel they don’t have a real sense of purpose in life.

For SSAFA, which is launching a drive to encourage more people to consider volunteering to help charitable work such as its own, that response could be interpreted as extremely encouraging. Further analysis of public attitudes has shown that making someone who needs help to smile makes the majority of people feel better as well.

“It’s true said … of the charity’s Gloucestershire branch. Working to help our veterans and their families have a better life brings benefits to everyone. Joining one of our 91 SSAFA branches is a brilliant way to meet new people, develop your own skills and enhance the wellbeing of those in need as well as yourself. Making someone else’s day better needn’t cost a thing, apart from a commitment to give some of your time and there is a guaranteed benefit to those who join our work as well.”
