Regional Chair

Regional Representatives oversee all aspects of SSAFA volunteer activity across the region. You will see that all volunteers understand SSAFA policies and represent their views on the national Regional Reps Forum.

What is a Regional Representative?

There are eight SSAFA regions in the UK. Each region has a network of SSAFA services based on local needs. Regional Representatives oversee all aspects of SSAFA volunteer activity across the region. You will see that all volunteers understand SSAFA policies and represent their views on the national Regional Reps Forum.
Why

Why do we need you?

We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community for more than 130 years. Our network of local services is run by volunteers across every county in the UK. You will be the link between the volunteers on the ground and our Board of Trustees.

When would you be needed and where would you be based?

This role is about coordination and communication. Based from home you would need to be able to travel to meetings and events across the region.
The role would suit someone looking to offer a regular time commitment but dates and locations would vary.

  •  Online training modules to complete at home, so you are up to date on how to keep clients, their families and personal information safe.
  • Access to a range of e-learning courses as well as local opportunities to keep your training up to date
  • Regional Reps Forum comprising a Regional Rep for every region
  • Volunteer Support Manager (per region) for each region
  • Access to the Welfare Team and Volunteer Support Team based at our central office
  • Reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses

What are we looking for?

  • Friendly and approachable people with some experience of coordinating people and managing meetings
  • Good communication skills and written English
  • Ability to be respectful and non-judgemental with clients, their family, other agencies and SSAFA colleagues
  • Ability to send and receive emails – you will receive your own SSAFA email address
  • Ability to coordinate a team of people volunteering
  • Ability to keep within boundaries of the role with regards to reporting any safety concerns etc
  • Reliable attitude, keep appointments etc.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and keep information safely
  • Access to public transport or a car to travel to meetings, events etc.
  • Ability to provide two referees: former employers or other people that know you well (other than relatives)

  • The referee must have know you for at least two years - and you must still be in contact now.
  • The referee cannot be a member of your family.
  • The referee cannot live at the same address as you.

What you'll do

Key role responsibilities

  • Encouraging a coordinated regional approach to awareness, fundraising, recruitment and casework
  • Bringing together representatives of all volunteer activities at regional meetings
  • Attending at least one meeting and one training day per branch/In-Service committee annually
  • Supporting branch Chairs, as needed but especially when new to the role
  • Communicating and meeting regularly with the Volunteer Support Manager, discussing issued raised in the VSMs monthly reports, identifying opportunities to raise awareness of SSAFA
  • Making regular contact with regionally and nationally based staff to keep up to date
  • Participating in the Regional Reps Forum and additional working groups as appropriate
  • Providing regional reports and information as requested
  • Promoting SSAFA’s ethos, compliance with policy and the timely submission of monitoring information
  • Being a positive ambassador for SSAFA remembering that anyone you meet could be a potential client, volunteer or fundraiser
  • Volunteering within the standards and values of SSAFA including observing our policies such as the Volunteering policy and data protection policy (these will be covered in your training and local induction).
