Outward Bound!

27 December 2020

Soldier Mike O’Hara is a good example of how we do whatever is necessary to help the Forces Family, in his case, to make the transition from military to civilian life.

Mike is currently attending an intensive 15 week residential course in Swanage to qualify as an Outdoor Instructor, building on his service in the Yorkshire Regiment which included ten years in reconnaissance and two as a sniper. Mike served in Kosovo, Iraq and made two tours to Afghanistan. His service also took him on a Humanitarian Disaster Relief mission to the Caribbean, and training the Nigerian Army.

Married with three children - Jessica, 10, and seven-year-old twins William and Summer - Mike has been based in Warminster for much of his service. We worked with the Yorkshire Regiment Association to secure funding towards the cost of the outdoor instructor course. Mike’s father was a volunteer SSAFA caseworker and Mike has already raised funds for SSAFA and plans to do a fundraiser for our Kennet Division next year.

We are delighted that Mike has managed to secure an interview in January for an outdoor Instructor role and that we did our bit to make it happen.

If you know somebody who is leaving the services and might benefit from our help, please encourage them to get in touch at our website.

Please feel free to call our Forcesline if you need any support.
