An appeal from Dan Snow, military historian and SSAFA Ambassador
"Every day I am humbled in my role as SSAFA Ambassador. I meet the men and women who bravely put their lives on the line for our country and who turn to SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, for help. I believe it is our duty to thank those who have sacrificed so much.
Veterans like Royal Marine Mark Ormrod who was out on a routine foot patrol on Christams Eve, 2007, in Helmand Province of Afghanistan when he stepped on and triggered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
Three days later, he woke up in Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham to find both his legs had been amputated above the knee and his right arm above the elbow. He was just 23 years old.
£25 today will show veterans, like Mark, that we care – it is the least we can do
Mark had been so strong, but when he needed SSAFA, we were there for him and his family. While Mark was treated at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre at Headley Court, he stayed nearby at SSAFA’s Norton House. Here Mark and his fiancée, Becky, were able to spend valuable time together away from the hospital in a comfortable home-from-home environment.
Mark is just one of thousands of veterans who turn to SSAFA in their time of need. We have to be there to support them all. If you could give £25 today, you will be there too.
