With over 31,000 staff, Openreach looks after the fibres, wires and cables that connect tens of millions of homes and businesses to phone, broadband, data and TV services. Openreach has recruited over 2,000 ex-service personnel over the last few years. The partnership helps fund our confidential helpline ‘Forcesline’, ensuring we are here to provide emotional, practical and financial advice and support whenever we’re needed by someone in the Armed Forces family.
Openreach employees have raised more than £178,000 through different fundraising events since the partnership was launched in April 2015, as well as assisting SSAFA through volunteering time and expertise.
In 2017 we launched our first overseas challenge event in partnership with Openreach, to Iceland. Following the trip’s success, we then took a group of 16 Openreach employees to trek through the Helambu Region of Nepal in 2018. Not only was this a fantastic fundraiser, but it also gave trekkers the opportunity to discuss how vital SSAFA's services are. We are excited to announce that the next Openreach overseas trek will be to Mount Toubkal in Morocco, and it will take place in September 2019.
Mike McTighe, Chairman Openreach:
“SSAFA is a fantastic charity fulfilling a hugely important role at the heart of the military community. Like Openreach, SSAFA has strong and trusted relationships with communities across Britain, and they share our desire to give service men and women the support they deserve, wherever and whenever they need it. Thousands of ex-military people and reservists are playing a vital role in our mission to build the best possible network with the highest quality of service, and make sure that everyone in Britain can be connected.
"We are proud that our military ties have become even stronger through our partnership with SSAFA."
