What is a Joining Forces Liaison

Each SSAFA branch will have a local Age UK, in fact, some SSAFA branches may have more than one Age UK. Around the country, 12 official Joining Forces partnerships have been set up where the local SSAFA branch has partnered with their local Age UK and they are working together to support Aged Veterans. We would like to replicate this around the country and would encourage SSAFA branches to work with their local Age UKs, make referrals, raise awareness and have presence.  

Why do we need you?

We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community for more than 130 years. Our clients come from all backgrounds and age groups and, in recognition of their service to the nation, we aim to provide financial, practical and emotional support when it’s needed most. We realise that the support does not end there and that by working with Age UK, we can support many of the needs of the older Veteran by utilizing their expertise and making links with this organization. We need volunteers like you to help make this happen.

When would you be needed and where would you be based?

Our Joining Forces Liaisons are needed throughout the week in the local area - though your convenience is paramount.  As part of your local branch you might have access to an office, but many volunteers are based at home. You might also be able to drop-in to your local Age UK or community group. The role will take you to both client's homes and public meetings.

What training and support is there?

  • Local induction
  • Training modules to complete at home, so you are up to date on how to keep clients, their families and personal information safe
  • Reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses

What you'll do

Key role responsibilities

  • To remain in full compliance of all SSAFA Policies and procedures relating to volunteering and the wider context, ensuring confidential handling of all information concerning clients in accordance with SSAFA’s confidentiality and data protection policies.
  • To build and maintain a professional relationship between SSAFA and Age UK and other collaborating partners of the Joining Forces project.
  • Liaising and establishing solid relationships between the SSAFA Branch, Age UK Partner, clients and external partners to make referrals, support administration of project and raise awareness of Joining Forces potentially on social media platforms.
  • Promotion of SSAFA in the local area so that eligible Aged Veterans (born before 1st January 1950) are aware of assistance available, by attending local community groups, events and/or meetings and building relationships with the local Age UK partner.
  • This role does not require caseworking.
  • Raising any concerns regarding safety and wellbeing – the client’s, self or others in line with safeguarding policies and following SSAFA’s policies, values and standards.
