Amanda and Anthea

Read about two army veterans who have gone on to build amazing careers in the civilian world, supported by Amey, a SSAFA supporter and signatory to the Armed Forces Covenant.

Amanda Fisher

Amey Defence Services has been one of SSAFA’s corporate partners since 2015. Amey recognises the contribution that our Armed Forces and their families make to our country. They understand the important job our Service personnel do and that is reflected through their business model. They have pledged to sign up to be Friendly to Forces.

Amanda Fisher is the Managing Director of Facilities Management, Defence and Justice at Amey – and is also a service leaver.

Amanda Fisher was appointed in August 2017. She is leading a business with 6000 employees and revenues of over £800m throughout the UK.

Right from the start of her career Amanda sought demanding leadership roles, training at Sandhurst and being commissioned as an Army officer.  She then pursued her goal of delivering services designed for people’s needs through senior and board positions in facilities management.

Prior to joining Amey, she was the Managing Director of Balfour Beatty Living Places becoming the first female to reach such a UK senior role within the International construction and services group.  She has previously held roles at Alfred McAlpine Business Services, Allied Healthcare Group and ISS Defence and Security.  Wherever she has worked she has championed diversity and the development of staff potential and achieved business success by challenging existing cultures and promoting clear business visions, values and strategies.

Anthea Purvis

Anthea Purvis, a Quantity Surveyor from our Amey and Black & Veatch joint venture for Scottish Water, has reason to celebrate after qualifying as a chartered surveyor (MRICS). She is one service leaver who shows why a business should pledge to be Friendly to Forces.

Anthea’s journey from the Army to Amey started when she joined the Territorial Army at 18. It was after 10 years in the Army and following her second tour in Iraq, that she decided she needed a change in her life. At the age of 28, she enrolled at Heriot-Watt University and completed a four year degree in quantity surveying. After working in New Zealand, she joined Amey after seeing that we could support people through a two year structured programme involving everything it takes to become a Chartered Quantity Surveyor.

Anthea has also been recently selected as one of 25 women to join the Women@Amey Leadership Development Programme.

“The Army gave me confidence, showed me how to prioritise and taught me to be meticulous. I’m really pleased to get the opportunity to improve my skills further with Amey, and will be taking courses on resilience, negotiation and communication. It’s also making me aware of the opportunities with the company.

“It’s hard to find the time to study with a busy job managing up to 60 projects but I found all the support I needed here. There’s such a good network; there is always somebody to ask.”
