SSAFA Cyprus Central Committee

Supporting service personnel and their families living on both the Eastern and Western Sovereign Base Areas.

Introduction

The Cyprus Central Committee exists to oversee and co-ordinate the work of the 4 in-service committees on the island: RAF Akrotiri, Ayios Nikolaos, Dhekelia and Episkopi & Troodos. The committee has a chairĀ  and a secretary but no other office-holders since it is a non-fundraising committee.

Committee Function

Meetings of the committee take place 3-4 times a year, and the chairs of the individual in-service committees plus the Branch representative, the Director Community Healthcare Operations, the Community Volunteer Co-ordinators, the Regional Overseas Support Manager based in the UK and various ad hoc members are invited.

These meetings serve as a forum at which to share ideas, feed back on successful fundraising events, highlight best practice and hear from the SSAFA Cyprus branch and the SSAFA Central Office about any relevant issues or initiatives.

The committee chair is also responsible for overseeing the work and meeting the expenses of the Community Volunteer Co-ordinators, whose job it is to recruit, train and provide oversight of the work of the community volunteers. Community volunteers can be called upon to provide confidential help and support in a variety of ways, ranging from lifts to hospital, shopping for the housebound or helping with childcare. All volunteers are fully trained in safeguarding.

Cyprus is unique in having a close working relationship between in-service (those currently serving and their families) and Branch (veterans), and fundraising events by one are often supported by the other.
