In 2010, Corporal Liam Riley was killed while on active service in Afghanistan. Liam, 20 left behind his sister Olivia, who was then aged six, his mother and grandmother.
Liam’s family was put in touch with SSAFA’s Bereaved Families Support Group, which also hosts the workshops for bereaved children, enabling individuals and families to come together to share their feelings and stories and mutually support each other.
‘Losing Liam broke my heart,’ said Olivia. ‘My friends at school haven’t lost a brother or sister – I’m an odd one out. When I go to SSAFA, everyone understands everything I’ve been through because they’ve been through it too. I know I’m not the only one.’
