Join SSAFA's ride to the Somme Challenge and cycle through history!

27 January 2022

SSAFA is once again encouraging riders to join their Ride to the Somme event, this year taking place in May.

The Ride to the Somme event is a unique opportunity for keen cyclists to raise much needed funds to support the Armed Forces community, whilst cycling through an area rich in history.

Participants can choose between two routes: 50-miles-a-day or 75-miles-a-day. These two routes allow cyclists to ride in groups at a similar pace.

Ride to the Somme is a fully supported cycle ride based in Amiens, France, which provides a unique opportunity to discover the area's history, particularly as the location of the Battle of the Somme, where over a million men were killed or wounded.

James Grant, who took on the event himself previously, is the Head of Individual Giving and Legacies at SSAFA. He said:

“SSAFA’s Ride to The Somme is a truly unique and humbling experience. Those lucky enough to take part will learn about the history of the battlefields and memorials of the Somme region, and the enormous sacrifices made so that we can enjoy our freedoms today. In addition, they will challenge themselves physically while raising vital funds for a wonderful charity and will make friends for life. Having taken part in 2017, 2018 and 2019 I cannot wait to get back on the bike for Ride to The Somme 2022 and recommend it highly to cyclists of all levels.”

The ride will take place between 18 – 22 May 2022, with a historian present on the third day to provide insights to the local area.

Riders are encouraged to raise money for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity which provides practical, emotional, and financial support to our Forces and their families. Their teams of volunteers and employees help those currently serving, veterans, and their families to retain their independence and dignity.

For those that wish to take part the registration fee is £125, with a fundraising target of £1600.  You can register here.

Please feel free to call our Forcesline if you need any support.
