teamSSAFA take on Midlands 30:30
This challenge involves teams of 4 or 5 trekking for a gruelling 30 miles or 30km carrying 30lbs on their back. Fortunately, after a few early morning showers, the sun shone throughout the afternoon creating a lovely setting for the teams to complete their fundraising challenge.
10 teams set out in the early hours of the morning on Saturday 17 February. Team ‘Break Point’ consisted of 4 participants from Channel 4’s SAS: Who Dares Wins. Co-presenter Ollie Ollerton led his team to victory, completing the longer 30 mile route in an impressive 11:25. They were closely followed in second place by the jolly ‘Denstone Dads’ who walked for just 45 minutes more. The winning team of the 30km was ‘Training Run’ who finished in just under 6 hours beating their record from 2016. The only all female team ‘Denstone Girls’ battles through blisters and finished in a respectable 10:27.
We also saw three teams taking part in a new shorter route. The teams trekked 14km carrying 18lbs. ‘Ryan’s Runners’ completed the challenge in 2:18, beating the next team by almost an hour.
Tribe Bars and Blackfriars Flapjack both kindly donated delicious bars which were handed out at check points. The bars were gladly received by participants and kept their teams going across the beautiful countryside surrounding Denstone College in Uttoxeter.
SSAFA would like to say a huge thank you to all participants, local SSAFA branches, supporters and organisers of the event, notably to Nia Linnell. Nia led the event fantastically, from the 3am start through to the celebratory curry dinner in the evening.
