The chance to run in the iconic Virgin London Marathon is a lifelong dream for many runners and there's stiff competition for places.
This year, SSAFA has 32 lucky runners who are all looking forward to crossing that finish line and wear their Virgin London Marathon medal with pride. Between them they will run a staggering 832 miles.
Our team is a mix of civilian, military and ex-military personnel who have all been training hard over the cold winter months. In addition, they’ve each pledged to raise £1,600, which will amount to over £50,000 to help SSAFA continue its life changing work with our Forces and their families.
One of this years runner Tom Morrison, a Senior Under Officer at Bristol University Officer Training Corps is hoping to complete the race in three hours and three minutes. Tom says,
“I'm running for SSAFA as I understand that serving in the military is not about one person's commitment. In joining the military the families of personnel also undergo the stresses and pressures of the job that their loved ones do. After all the parades and medal ceremonies have finished, forces return to their families and some of these families need SSAFA's help.
I'm feeling confident about the race. It's my first full marathon and the dates have been slowly counting down on my calendar for a year now!”
To all of our runners, we want to wish you the very best for this weekend. Surround yourself with positive thoughts and remind yourself why you have decided to run for SSAFA in the first place. It won’t be long now until you have that sought-after medal in your hands. You should feel incredibly proud of yourself. Good luck!
