More than a dozen stars have joined serving families and civilians to help SSAFA mark the end of the British war in Afghanistan.

As combat operations ended last week, our troops in Afghanistan are now heading back to their loved ones. SSAFA, together with the Daily Mirror, are asking the country to help us welcome them home with with thousands of 'selfie' style salutes. The salutes are show of support for the men and women from the British Army, Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Royal Air Force, past and present.

EastEnders’ TV star Lacey Turner said: “I’m really proud of every single man and women that has served in Afghanistan over the past 13 years.

“My role in ‘Our Girl’ gave me a real insight into what our troops experience whilst away on combat operations and sharing your salute is a great opportunity to say ‘thank you’ to them and their families.”

TV actor Ross Kemp said: “I would like to extend my huge thanks to all those who served in Britain’s Armed Forces and also to those who have supported them.”

At SSAFA we believe that the campaign is a unique opportunity to recognise what our Armed Forces do for us - and to remind people that as this major military operation draws to a close, we cannot afford to forget that the needs of serving personnel and their families will continue long after the conflict ends.
