SSAFA Young Achievers honoured in British Forces Cyprus

The annual SSAFA Young Achievers Awards for 2016 took place on the 2 June 2017 at Episkopi Headquarters Officers’ Mess and at which forty children and young adults were honoured for their efforts and different accomplishments during the year.

Now in its sixth year, the awards gave the British Forces Cyprus community the chance to recognise and pay tribute to the, sometimes overlooked, efforts and achievements of the young people who live in the BFC Community.

Their achievements varied in nature, from coping with learning difficulties, adversity through ill health, undertaking voluntary work, supporting sick parents as young carers and generally meeting the challenges that come with being a child within a British Forces family.

Chief of Staff, Brigadier Nick Orr, kindly took time out of his very busy schedule to present the Awards and Certificates to the nominees.  His address was extremely well received by the recipients and their families and included a powerful heartfelt message from Major General James Illingworth, Commander British Forces, who unfortunately was unable to attend on the day.

The event organiser, SSAFA Community Volunteer Coordinator, Ann MacDougall, has nothing but admiration for all the nominees.  She said: “I feel it is so important that the challenges and work of our young people are recognised and celebrated.  The difference these young people can make by becoming role models to others should not be underestimated by the wider BFC Community.

I have enormous respect for all of them and feel that the challenges they face are not always recognised.  They are away from friends and extended family, many are attending school in a military environment for the first time and these factors can create a tremendous upheaval in their lives and that should be acknowledged.”

The 2016 Young Achiever Awards have again proved a great success, with over 150 people attending the ceremony and enjoying the wonderful buffet provided by the Mess staff and our Sponsors Sodexo, who also provided the trophies.

Thanks also go to the Cyprus Music Service who provided the music as guests arrived and a Community Volunteer, Mick Allgood, for the lunchtime music.

It is hoped that with the continuing support of SSAFA, Sodexo and the BFC community, the Young Achiever Awards for 2017 will prove to be just as successful as those in previous years.
