Major General James Chiswell CBE MC presented Bridgette with her award in recognition of her commitment and support to the local military community in Bielefeld in Germany, where SSAFA provides dedicated health care and volunteer support to Forces and their families.
Bridgette has been a service committee volunteer for almost three years, where she has been the driving force and lead co-ordinator behind various annual fundraising events such as the SSAFA Big Brew Up, Military Wives Choir evening and the very successful Herford Station Christmas Fair.
These annual events not only help to raise money to continue the vital work of SSAFA, they also develop and maintain the strong bond across the Herford Station community.
Bridgette said: “I was delighted, and immensely proud, to receive the GOC’s commendation for the work I have done organising fund-raising events for SSAFA here in Herford Station.
“I believe that volunteers are the ‘glue’ that holds the military community together, and as Herford Station moves towards closure in Summer 2015, our role becomes ever more important. I have been privileged to work alongside a fantastic team of SSAFA volunteers over the past two years, and feel that this award is recognition of all of our efforts to support the troops, and their families, in Herford.”
During her time on the committee, Bridgette has helped raise over €10,000. She also volunteers for HIVE Europe and frequently assists as a supply teacher at Lister School.
Christine Cribb, Head of Volunteer Network Support at SSAFA said: “I would personally like to thank Bridgette for her loyalty, commitment and dedication to the Herford Branch of SSAFA and the outstanding support she provides to Herford Station military community. Bridgette is one of over 7,000 SSAFA volunteers in over 160 locations across the UK and overseas, providing hands on support to our Forces and their families, whenever and whenever its needed.”
