SSAFA Fife commemorate RAF 100

Graham Meacher, Chairman of SSAFA Fife and Managing Director of the British Forces Philatelic Service (BFPS), has been very busy this week sending out commemorative covers to mark the 100th anniversary of the Royal Air Force.

After a review of the British Air Services in 2017, King George V authorised the creation of a new branch of the British military, and in 2018 the Royal Naval Air Service and the Royal Flying Corps were merged to create the Royal Air Force - the world’s very first independent air force

Since then the Royal Air Force has been an integral part of the British military, serving with distinction in the Second World War, The Falklands, The Gulf, Afghanistan, and many other theatres of war since then.

As 2018 is the centenary of the Royal Air Force, BFPS produced a special commemorative cover,  which was released on the 1st April 2018. Proceeds from the sale of all BFPS covers are donated to Service charities, including SSAFA.

This superb looking cover bears the images of the four founding fathers of the RAF, Lord Hugh Trenchard, Field Marshall Jan Christian Smuts, Air Vice Marshall Sir Charles Longcroft and Sir Winston Churchill.  A special postmark featuring the RAF logo will be used to cancel one of the Royal Mail's specially issued 1st class 'RAF Centenary' stamps.

The anniversary is particular pertinent to SSAFA as it was shortly after the historic formation in 1918 that the SSFA added “Airmen” to its title to became SSAFA – Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen’s, Families Association.

Information about the special Commemorative covers and how to order them can be found on the BFPS online shop (
