Cordwainers are shoemakers, originally highly skilled craftsmen who used the finest goatskin leather from Cordoba in Spain. The Company’s roots date back to 1272, and the first Charter in 1439 licensed Cordwainers to control the shoe trade within the City of London. Today, the Cordwainers have a strong charitable ethos.
Mr Peal said of his choice: ‘I have chosen SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity for many personal reasons – one being that I now have a member of my family in the Army so it’s close to home.’
The Cordwainers links with SSAFA has grown over the years, partly through its connection with the Fusiliers. The Cordwainers has supported the ‘C’ Company of the Army Reserve of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers for over 50 years.
During the year, the company will fundraise for our mentoring programme which helps motivate, support and empower service leavers and their family to fulfil their potential in their new lives outside the military. They will be specifically funding training for new volunteer mentors which are needed to ensure we can continue to deliver this much needed service to those who come to us for support.
Tegan Jones, our Director of Fundraising, said: ‘We are extremely grateful that the Master of the Worshipful Company of Cordwainers has chosen SSAFA for his charity this year and look forward to working with the Company on a number of fundraising initiatives over the year.’
