New head of UK Armed Forces attends SSAFA event

General Sir Nicholas Houghton showed his commitment to Armed Forces charities when he attended his first official engagement as the newly appointed Chief of the Defence Staff in support of SSAFA on Thursday 18th July.

General Houghton, who was accompanied by his wife Lady Maggie Houghton joined 150 other guests at the private viewing of the Armed Forces Art Society exhibition, including SSAFA volunteers and staff. The charity’s Chairman, General Sir Kevin O’Donoghue, thanked supporters and friends of the charity for their ongoing generosity and commitment.

Christopher Leahy, one of SSAFA’s Social Work team in Germany, also spoke at the event. His speech commemorated 50 years of SSAFA Social Work and highlighted the important link between SSAFA professional staff and volunteer activities.

General Sir Kevin O’Donoghue, SSAFA Chairman, commented “We were delighted that General Sir Nicholas was able to join us for his first official engagement and had to opportunity to hear first hand about the vital work SSAFA undertakes to support the military community.”
