Michael Morpurgo edits World War One anthology for SSAFA

SSAFA will be one of the charities to benefit from the publication of Only Remembered – a collection of powerful words and pictures about World War One. Chosen by some of the UK’s leading cultural, literary and political figures, the book is edited by creator of War Horse, Michael Morpurgo. Only Remembered is published on 3 July to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.

High-profile contributors include Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall, actors Joanna Lumley and Emma Thompson, authors Jacqueline Wilson, Terry Pratchett, Jilly Cooper, Charlie Higson and Children’s Laureate Malorie Blackman, as well as many other well-known figures including Sarah Brown, Richard Curtis, Sir Roger Bannister, Ben Elton, Ben Barnes and Miranda Hart – all of whom introduce their piece with a personal explanation of their choice.

This timeless anthology is a uniquely diverse mix of fiction and non-fiction, poems and songs, personal accounts and images – many of which have never-before been seen in print.

Renowned illustrator Ian Beck has created the cover and artwork, and has also made a selection inside. The result is a visually rich and hugely accessible collection for children and adults.

50% of the royalties from the book will be split between SSAFA, the only national charity still operating that were involved in WWI, and The Royal British Legion where formed after the conflict.

Michael Morpurgo, the former Children’s Laureate and creator of War Horse is the perfect person to edit and introduce Only Remembered. Michael comments, “Only Remembered is for all of those from the 10 million soldiers killed on all sides, many were young and some even younger, barely out of school. Most never grew old enough to know or be known by their children or their grandchildren. This book is made for all of them.”

Only Remembered will be released on 3rd July 2014 by the prestigious and newly-revived Jonathan Cape children’s fiction list – home to classic novels such as The Silver Sword and The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, and acclaimed anthologies such as such as The Birthday Book for His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, also compiled by Michael Morpurgo.

Publisher Annie Eaton comments, ‘’Working with Michael on this collection has been a huge privilege for me, and a wonderful experience. The wide-ranging contributions, from generous well-known names across a variety of media, have been fascinating, revealing and often extremely moving. This is a book for all the generations, and I hope it will give readers understanding, knowledge and wisdom, as well as joy, even if it moves them to tears at times.”
