Lieutenant Colonel Dick Strawbridge, MBE, engineer, celebrity chef and environmentalist, has announced he is lending his support to one of SSAFA’s most loved and successful fundraising events; the Big Brew Up.

The Big Brew Up, now in its 16th year, is SSAFA’s biggest annual fundraiser. Every year tea parties take place up and down the country and around the world wherever British Forces are based including Afghanistan, Canada, Germany and Cyprus. The event sees people get together with family, friends and colleagues for a cup of tea and a slice of cake and all the money raised goes towards SSAFA’s vital work supporting both current and former members of our Armed Forces and their families.

This year’s Big Brew Up Week will be held from the 7th-13th October and Dick is encouraging people to register now to receive their fundraising pack in plenty of time for the main event.

Dick says, “Having served in the army for over 20 years, I know the difficulties military families can face. It’s hard moving home so often, and all the members of a family feel the stress when a mother or father, son or daughter, deploys away from home for months at a time. That’s why the work that SSAFA does is so important; they have been offering life long support for our Forces and their families for 128 years and their work is truly life changing.

“Holding a Big Brew Up might not seem like a lot, but the money raised from Big Brew Up’s around the world will go towards helping SSAFA, help our service men and women, and their families. Whether it is helping a World War Two Veteran with his heating bills or offering support and advice to a family who have lost a loved one in Afghanistan, SSAFA is there for them and they need your help now to keep up their vital work. So go on, put the kettle on and get baking!”

Catherine Wilson, Fundraising and Events Assistant continues, "Every year we need to raise enough funds to deliver a breadth of projects that improve thousands of lives. These projects include our Support Groups for families affected by bereavement or injury, Short Breaks for Children with Additional Needs and Disabilities and our Norton Homes for the loved ones of injured, wounded or ill serving personnel. By holding a Big Brew Up you will be helping us keep these vital projects running."
